Early Fall Wild Edible Plant Walk and Picnic

Come learn about the wild edible foods growing all around you and how to identify, forage, and eat wild plants in a responsible way. Class with begin at the Irene C. Hernandez Family Picnic area of LaBagh Woods. Students can try some premade wild food and tea while learning how to identify wild foods and forage responsibly then we will go on a plant walk through the woods. There will be no foraging on the walk because it is illegal to forage in the forrest preserves. Please note that illegally foraging in the preserves can cause damage the ecosystem that people are working hard to maintain, careless foraging can lead to certain plants becoming endangered and if you are caught doing so the police you will be fined. However pictures of edible plants with note cards can be taken on the walk. The note cards will have the plant’s common name, latin name and what parts of the plant are edible. Students can then take this information to harvest plants on their own property or in other acceptable locations.
